Planetside 2 created one of the most unique gameplay styles seen in the gaming world. Using Battlefield-style combat combined with hundreds or even thousands of players spread across 3 unique factions battling for control over whole continents. The game is still active, but certainly at a much lower population than in times past. To me Planetside 2 was one of the greatest games ever created so that brought me to the question: Will we ever see anything like it again?
Course with the shutting down of Planetside Arena; which was a spin off of the battle-royale style gameplay that really did not fit Planetside well, the chances that we will see a Planetside 3 from Daybreak Games are unfortunately quite low at this point.
PlanetSide 2 certainly set a high bar for large-scale, massively multiplayer first-person shooters with its epic battles and persistent world. While no other game has quite matched its unique blend of scale and gameplay, the gaming industry is always evolving and we could definitely see similar experiences in the future. The demand for large-scale immersive multiplayer experiences appear to still be strong. Developers are always pushing the boundaries of what's possible, and with advancements in technology we might see even more ambitious projects that build on the foundation laid by PlanetSide 2.
As for the Planetside Universe specifically, I'm not sure if we will see another iteration of it. Our best chance at seeing that again is likely a larger studio (Perhaps such as DICE) obtaining the license to the franchise to build a new game in its unique style. I think it's more likely we will see a project outside of the Planetside universe in the Planetside style of gameplay.
Planetside 2 is still an incredible game, the major downside at this point is the lack of a large playerbase to drive the epic large scale battles that it used to have. The good news is that it was announced Planetside 2 would be merging some servers to assist with this. Combining the spread out playerbase to a lower # of servers.
In summary, I'm not sure we will see the return of a Planetside 2 style game anytime soon but Planetside 2 is still available and if you're into first-person shooters I'd definitely recommend giving it a chance.
